Interesting as you say. Looks to be a proper mash of good and bad but buy the sounds of it a bargain for somebody who knows what they're doing. I'd consider one as a project but I think if I were to buy a proper Les Paul it would have to be new or have the S/N verified. Not sure you can be 100% sure though!
This topic kind of links in a way in with Shawns on brand power. I can understand as he's a luthier, the frustration he must feel when someone uses his brand name, and then makes a poor quality imitation, and sells it in a far-off land.
I recently paid £150 for a second hand Epiphone via Gumtree (a bit like Craigslist in the US), and honestly its every bit as good as my two USA Gibsons. I think I'd rather have that, even if the name on the top may be deemed by some as "inferior". I call bullpoop on that btw, a good guitar is a good guitar.
I'm not sure I would be confident enough in buying a second hand Gibson from say eBay at the moment. In a way I'm wondering if that will boost Gibsons sales of new guitars? Maybe for the mildly nervous folk the only way you KNOW you're buying a Gibson is going to a trusted dealer haha!

I own a chibson... I knew what i was buying and for my purposes of building a tribute guitar of the one Mike Ness Plays I could not justify $4000 to buy a real gibson and scratch it up.. Ill be totally honest. they are better than what you pay for. sure there not the real deal and the things they et wrong , they get wrong but their copies. you can complain when your paying such a miniscule amount. I swapped pickups and electronics and I am over the moon with what i have.. I have it setup as good as mu Real Gretsch and Feneder. But Im able to do that as its my job and i know hoe to get the best out of guitars, I happily pay it up against my gretsch and jazzmaster and with the Searcy P90s in it It sings.. Do i feel bad i bought an illegal guitar , not really. I would not have bought a real gibson in place of it. I would have maybe bought a kitset and then a fake Gibson decal and made my own counterfeit.. haha
lets remember that a lot of famous players tour with "ghost Built" guitars, Slash has made Gibson very rich from copying his counterfeit guitar..hahaha Joe satriani has his Ibanez built by a luthier then Ibanez copies them and sells them as ibanez..hahaha
I have a friend that tours with a local metal band and he has 3 Chibsons, he swapped in EMG's and because their solid bodies you cant see the wood joins like in mine and from the front to back ro youd never know they were not real..haha
